The tale of the “Reed Flute” by Rumi

Rumi poetry with Nobieh

The book of “Masnavi” from Molana Rumi, starts with a poem talking about the journey of a “Reed Flute”.

The Reed flute which is like a hollow bamboo, in Sufi culture is called “ Ney”.

I don’t know if you heard or have a Ney, but the sound is a bit melancholic in a way but touches deeply your soul as it is talking about the pain of separation at the beginning but it goes into the journey of the soul merging into the whole…

The metaphor of the NEY ( reed flute) in the sufi culture is :

To let go of the ego. Let go of the identity insead open the possibility for God to come in.

“ Empty yourself from yourself so that the divine spirit can flow through you and in you”

The ego talks about separation, but once the identification disappears, Unity happens and the realization that “ Separation” is nothing but an illusion as the only reality is Love and in the realm of Love All is one, all is divine, all comes from the source ,goes to the source…

So now ,

Rumi starts the book of “ Masnavi” with this poem :

🦋:

“”” Listen to the reed how it tells a tale, complaining of separation.

Saying : Ever since I was parted from the Reed-bed, my lament has caused man and woman to moan.

I want a bosom torn by severance, that I may unfold the pain of Love-desire.

Everyone who let itself far from his source wishes back the time when he was united with it.

In every company I uttered my grieving cry; I consorted with the unhappy and with the them that rejoiced.

Everyone became my friend from his own opinion; None sought out my secret from within me.

My secret is not far away from my complaint, but ear and eye lack the light.”””

🦋2 lines in Farsi language:

بشنو از نی چون حکایت می کند

از جدایی ها شکایت می کند

🦋How it is pronounced:

Beshno az Ney chon Hekayat mikonad,

Az joda iha shekayat mikonad.

The NEY ( reed flute) through Rumi, start the masnavi with this beautiful poem which transmits the message of “ the dead of the Ego and rebirth of the soul”.

And Rumi says :

As the reed flute, Let’s pray that when your heart breaks, It breaks Open!

As you want a heart which has been cut open so that the light can enter you…

And as the master of Rumi , the mysterious one that turned all Rumi’s life upside down and inspired him to enlightenment, the one most of Rumi’s poetry is dedicated to and mentioned is whose name means the SUN,

“ Shams”, said:

“ What a difference between a heart that simply breaks and a heart that breaks open”
